My husband surprised me with a very special gift last Valentine's day... he got me a DSK necklace! It was very sweet of him and although they are not diamonds or pearls, it was the very first "girly" gift he's ever given me (besides the wedding rings). He usually buys me nerdy stuff like cameras and lenses and computers because he himself is techie so its always a very nice surprise when he steps outside of the box and buys me something like this because I feel like a "girl" and start to get giddy inside. hehe. Can you believe Valentines Day is less than a month away?! Better start planning now!!! <3

My friend has recently decided to start her own business, an up-cycled functional art business. You see, she's very eco-conscious and loves recreating functional art for the home. Closet Re-do Update

If you remember from this post, I've been itching to re-do my Master closet/bedroom for awhile now. Since I'm limited on budget, I decided to start by re-arranging my closet. Taking out some shelves, organizing my clothes in a way that will allow more fluidity, and by tossing the old plastic hangers and replacing it with these velvet Slimline hangers from Real Simple at Bed, Bath and Beyond. Let me tell ya, it makes a HUGE difference. I can add extra tops to my closet now because I've eliminated wasted space by tossing the thick plastic hangers. These thin, velvet ones are much more economical and I love that it makes my closet look more professional.

Garnier Nutrioniste - Moisture Repair Gel Creme

I bought this moisturizer at Ulta when they were having their buy 1 get 1 50% off sale. I should have read it more clearer though because when I opened the package, I saw that it was gel instead of cream, which I'm accustomed to seeing in a moisturizer. But, since I was lazy to go back and return it, I decided to keep it and try it out. Here's what I think about it. I don't like it very much because it's gel so it dries up super-duper fast and in the middle of winter, in Wisconsin nonetheless, I need all the moisturizing I can get! I don't like that since it's gel, I only have to use a little of it to cover my face and neck. This might be a good thing if it was a product I actually like but when its not and you're like me where you feel guilty for wasting, its bad and annoying. I'm thinking about using it as a body lotion just so I can use it up faster and buy a "real" moisturizer. Then, I don't like how it smells like compost cucumber. Some of you may enjoy that smell but I don't. Hmmm... I'm really missing my Philosophy Hope in a Jar right about now. :(

BeautyMint - Cleanser with Aloe

The BeachMint brands started out with jewelry and that was such a huge success that they expanded their brand into StyleMint (t-shirts), ShoeMint (shoes), and BeautyMint (skincare). Although all of these Mint Brands are subscription service sites, meaning you will be charged monthly a set price, you have the option to "Skip the Month" and not get charged before the 5th of every month but only after the 1st of the month. Not a lot of e-commerce subscription sites, like BirchBox, gives you that option so its a nice perk that the Mint Brands do. The only subscription I have so far with the Mint Brands is JewelMint because I love jewelry and I always find something I like within my budget. I am curious about the other brands but not enough for me to be a member. When JewelMint sent me a surprise gift with my order, it was a BeautyMint product - the Essential Cleanser with Aloe. I've been using it for a few weeks now and I don't feel much different than if I use drugstore brand cleansers or regular soap, which I do most of the time. If there was an option to purchase single products, I would be curious to try out their Ultra Replenishing Serum and their Renewing Moisturizer but unfortunately, BeautyMint does not allow you to purchase single products at this time. I am hoping they change this soon because not all products are sold in the same quantity and you might not use one as much as another. Since I'm a person who does not like to waste, I will use all of this cleanser and see if there is a difference at the end.

Although Aloe is one of the major ingredients, I feel like there is really nothing else that is special with this cleanser.

The Essential Cleanser comes out as a gooey, clear-green substance.

Upcoming Project: Bejeweled Safety Pin

I was inspired by the newest series to the Project Runway family, Project Runway All Stars, and decided I MUST recreate this ASAP! The inspiration came from Anthony Michael's bejeweled safety pin he accessorized with his kelly green gown. I tried googling closer pictures of the pin but came up unsuccessful since it wasn't a creation that he made on the show, instead, it was a creation he chose to bring onto the show for the first challenge. So, I resorted to screen-capping the image. I did a bad job since it was just a few seconds of the show but I think I did okay. haha. Check it out! Isn't it awesome? And the perfect pin to use for this is JewelMint's Pin Up necklace. Honestly, I think he probably did use their Pin Up necklace and just bejeweled it. hehe. Either way, its so pretty and I can't wait to get the Pin in the mail so I can start hot-gluing these jewels on.

This is one of my favorite outfits from Jason Wu's Fall 20ll RTW collection and ever since I've seen the silk, mustard skirt I've been looking to find an exact one that fits my budget but to no success. I also love the black lace top but of course, I can't find any within my budget either. So, I'm happy that he is incorporating a black and yellow/mustard option in his Target collection. Are you excited for this collection? I am. And unlike the Missoni for Target collection, when this hits stores on February 5th, I will be waiting in line at 8 AM! I won't make the mistake of thinking its a small town and nobody will care about that collection.

House Project for 2012 - The Master Bedroom

When my husband and I were looking for houses to buy, there were a couple of things on our list that we absolutely had to have -

A large yard.
A quiet neighborhood.
First-floor laundry.
2+ full bathrooms.
A Master bedroom (large, double windows, his/her closet, and private bathroom).

We eventually found "the one" but of course as with all dreams, the finalization came in a different form than how we pictured it. Of course, we are nomads by nature and can adept easily so we learned how to utilize the space we had. And as with life, a house project never finishes on time and then you get caught up in other affairs and you forget what your goals were in the first place. Well, since its the end of the year, I like to reflect and see what I've accomplished and what have yet to be so. The main thing that came into my mind was the master bedroom. I've been wanting to:

Repaint the walls and ceiling.
Take out the old ceiling fan and install a chandelier.
Redo my side of the closet (since the husband is pretty content with his).
Tear out the old carpet and install wood floors.

It's not too much to ask of right? LOL. And you know the sad thing is that if I had the money, it would have been finished already! BUT - I will just have to do with what I have for now. Here is a glimpse into my closet (at least my side of the closet).

First off, I'd like to say thank you to HandMadeReviews.net for the Beauty Blog nomination. Although I did not win, I believe the right person won because her blog is amazing and it was well-deserved! At first when I heard I was one of the contenders for the award, I was quite shocked because I am far from the usual beauty blogger - in fact, I hardly do makeup swatches or makeup tutorials because I think there is far too many blogs like that and I think guru's such as Xteeener, RaeView, and HollyAnnAeree already do a great job at those things. For 2012, I'd like to focus more on makeup tools such as brushes, tweezers, curling irons, etc. and I'd like to do more makeup tutorials. I wish I lived closer to my sisters because I could show better pictures of the tutorials and the makeup. There are a lot of times I wish I had a personal photographer who followed my every move and took pictures of everything because I believe I have a lot to offer my readers. Maybe I'll start bribing my husband...

Usually, I wait until the new year to start on any goal but starting early doesn't hurt. If anything, it makes me do the job better. I have planned for you a makeup tutorial on Bella Swan's wedding day makeup and hair. Now of course, since Kristen Stewart has different features than I do, it will be off but it will be my own interpretation of her wedding day look. I hope to start on the tutorial tomorrow and have it up by tomorrow night. And if you haven't seen Breaking Dawn part 1 yet, here is a picture of her wedding day look:

I would love to contribute more to my blog next year in the beauty and fashion industry as well as give some insider tips to designing in Photoshop/Illustrator and how to use your DSLR to its full advantage. What are some goals you set for your blog next year? I'd like to hear what you have planned for 2012 so maybe I can add on more to my list as I like to achieve as many goals as I can.

Also, I'd like to share some pictures with you from my side of the family's Christmas gathering this past weekend. Every year, my husband and I plan our Christmas gatherings with the family at least 6 months ahead so that we can devote an entire weekend to both sides of the family. This year, we are celebrating my family's gathering a week earlier because this weekend (Christmas) is with my husband's side of the family. And with both sides of the family, we do Secret Santas because frankly, our family gets bigger and bigger every year! I enjoy seeing people open my gifts the most but it breaks my heart every time they tear the precious gift wrapping I've created because I spend so much time on wrapping and finding the best paper and bows and ribbons to wrap the presents with. And don't get me wrong, I enjoy opening gifts too as well!

I received a surprise gift from my husband, a Nikkor 40mm f/2.8G lens for my DSLR. Its been awhile since he's surprised me with a gift since we both are pretty nosy people and nothing gets by without a little hint or clue but he totally caught me off guard. I also got a Packers jersey and the Samantha Who? Season 2 dvd from my Secret Santa. I love the fashion in that show and it was just too bad it was cancelled after only 2 seasons.

I know this color combo gets overdone WAY too much with me but I seriously love black! If you look inside my closet, you'll mostly see black. And why not? Its professional, sexy, and sliming! This outfit is something I wear to work. I added simple, long, layering necklaces to offset the color.

This shop caught my attention because of the unique designs and craftsmanship as well as the awesome personalization. The pieces are priced well and I loved that they contacted me with answers to my questions in a timely manner. I received my piece a week before my given date. They were very accommodating in the fact that I said I needed it in time for Christmas. I have not had one bad experience with Etsy shops yet and recommend this shop for all your unique gifting needs. These hangers are perfect to gift for Christmas, birthdays, religious celebrations, bridesmaids showers, for brides and maids, and even for baby showers! Old Navy 75% off Sale (ended)

I was not aware of this 75% off sale (adult outerwear on Saturday and adult sweaters today) until a friend posted on FB that the lines were crazy at our local Old Navy. So, I got ready in a haste and got there by 4PM (the sale ended at 5PM both days) and found the peacoat that I've been wanting to buy - originally $80 dollars - and I got it for $20 dollars! Steal!!! I was going to wait until Black Friday but this deal was too good to pass up. I also went in again today for their sweater sale since I saw a sweater-dress that I had wanted but those were not included so I walked out with nothing. Which is okay because hopefully, Black Friday will include those dresses!

Here's the peacoat I got. My sister says its not thick enough for our Wisconsin Winter but I'll be layering like I usually do so I should be fine. Plus, I get really hot really quick so this was a great option for me.

These are the sweater-dresses that I want (original price is $45 dollars). The material isn't thick and the SP fits wonderful and cuts off at just above the knee to make it flattering for my small-chubby frame. But at $45 dollars, I don't want to fork up that much because I know there will be a sale soon!

Doorway decor. I love the basket idea versus the usual Christmas wreath.

If you don't use your fireplace, then this is a great idea to display your Christmas cards. It's also a lovely conversation piece. I love looking at Christmas cards and pictures. It warms my soul!

I love the indoor wreath idea, the Pom Poms on the ice skates is such a fun idea! I will have to make some for mine! And the tree skirt gives me an idea to use one of my Hmong skirts to incorporate a little culture into the Christmas spirit!

Although its cold Winters are rough, the beauty of it speaks for itself when you witness untouched snow laying strategically on pine trees. It is quite a sight! And when you think of Christmas, you think of the colors green and red... so, its only fitting that Christmas photos include those colors. I mean, you wouldn't send out Christmas cards wearing black and orange now would you? hehe. Even stores seem like they only carry those colors in clothes and shoes. So, although its easy to find clothes in red, its hard to find it in a unique style. And when you're from a small town where stores are limiting in style and everyone shops there, its more likely you'll show up to a party and find your twin there.

So, I've done some shopping online and found a few styles that I like. Which one do you like? Number 1, 2, or 3 and why?

For the holidays, I always look forward to spending time with family and friends, music, great food, lots of games, and taking lots and lots of photos!

Asos Order Review

When I placed my order for Asos, I had already known what I wanted so it was easy for me to navigate around their website. I placed the order on October 7th and received it in the mail on October 13th. Very fast shipping considering its a UK commerce site. My items came in well packaged with no damage at all. Here are my own pictures of what I ordered.

The lipstick and earrings came in this Asos box so there was no damage to them at all.

The earrings are made well and were very light despite how it looks. I think its very elegant looking and will go well with an evening look, maybe a black-tie event with a long gown.

I think I was most delightedly surprised about this lipstick than anything. As some of you may know, I've been searching for THE perfect shade of red lipstick for the longest time. So, when I tried on the lipstick, I was hooked! It glides on so well. The consistency is quite superb compared to the other brands I've tried. The lipstick is pretty true to color in the ads. The packaging is cute and simple. My lipstick arrived just like their picture on their website so don't be alarmed by my lipstick tube. My brother got a hold of my lipstick after my SIL used it and he totally ruined it! I'm still not a happy camper about that but what can you do?! I can already tell, I'll be using this shade a lot this season when I go out. So, Rimmel better make this available in the USA soon! I'm dying to try the other shades!

And yes, the sweaterdress was not included in my review today for a reason... You'll just have to check back to see it!

Autumn's arrival has been quite the show this year in Wisconsin. Nonetheless, I always enjoy taking these pictures. You can always have fun with Mother Nature!

I also received my Forever Audrey earrings and Pebble earrings (see picture below) from JewelMint. I've ordered mostly earrings from JM and have been hoping for a necklace to die for since JM's Setting Sun necklace debuted. I hope they design statement necklaces again instead of charm necklaces. For now, I'll be okay with earrings!

My FIRST Asos Order

I just received an email from Asos regarding a giveaway held by Handmadereviews that I entered and won! I received a code to use for $50 dollars off. This really pushed me to finally make my first Asos purchase with stuff in my wishlist I've had for a few months now. But, first, I want to thank Handmadereviews for hosting this lovely giveaway and to Asos for their generosity! I love that Asos provides FREE STANDARD SHIPPING both ways - no minimum requirement. When I do online shopping, I always check the stores S&H policies and fees. If its too much, I try another site with similar products and even if its a little more expensive, as along as its FREE shipping - I'll most likely go with that one. I live in Wisconsin and that means Winter can strike at any moment this time of year - although we have been getting gorgeous 70's degree weather for a week now, odd - so, I've been looking for a knit sweater dress since I own NONE at all. I know. I know. I should have like 3 or so since I live in Wisconsin but honestly, when I think of the harsh Winter months we have, the last thing on my mind is a dress to wear outside! But - this year, one of my goals was to step outside of my comfort zone in regards to fashion and this would be stepping wayyyyy out of the box since you'll most likely find me in sweatpants and long underwear in Winter. I just thought this dress would be work appropriate, Holiday parties appropriate, and it would be cute on for my Christmas photos! Picture me in this dress with black tights, white ice skates, and cute white earmuffs skating around a frozen pond... (btw, that's how I shop; by picturing myself in certain scenarios and events). This dress came in 3 different colors so I chose this lovely "Summer Brown" color because I don't have many brown, neutral colors in my wardrobe yet and this color goes with most of my accessories I already own.

Octoberfest 2011

Downtown Appleton's Octoberfest is always an event I look forward to each year - mainly for the amazing variety of food! It's been our 5th year attending this event now and each year, we look forward to most the stuffed chicken wings at the Hmong vendors! Its a little overpriced @ $2.50 ea. but its something I am willing to pay for since I don't like making them myself. The process is too long for me. Last year, I had grilled stuffed chicken wings. I didn't care for those too much since they tasted rubbery to me so this year, I made sure to look for the deep-fried ones! I also always get at least 2 or more of the Tiger Paws. Growing up, I loved eating Elephant Ears at the local fair but since moving to Northeast Wisconsin, I haven't been able to find a vendor that makes Elephant Ears. Instead, they have Tiger Paws - which is kinda like Elephant Ears except they're thicker and doughier. Even better! There's only one booth that makes these each year and the line is pretty long but they've gotten a bit more organized so the line runs smoother, faster!

In addition to food, there is an arts and crafts area (which seems like it gets bigger every year) and a kids area with little rides and inflatable balloon rides. The kids of course, loves the kids area and although this is Octoberfest, I would like to see more options for kids/families. Walking through the streets is a pain, especially with drunks spilling their beer all over your strollers/wagons, and people smoking all around. Next year, we will have to park near the kid area and just stay within that zone!

Now onto the more serious things in my life...

I was not the victim in this case but I have been the victim many many times in my life before for being Asian - particularly, Hmong, in this state. Growing up, all I saw around me was segregation and racism in the little city of Wausau, Wisconsin. If you lived there, you were either White or Hmong (although now there is a lot more African American and Hispanics). So, I am not new to this same old story.

My sister from MN was visiting with her kids. We went to Octoberfest so they could sample a little of what Wisconsin had to offer next to their HUGE State Fair. It's just tragic to say that she had a great time up until two Caucasians standing behind her in line at the ATM said outloud, "They're so short. Is that kind even allowed to have bank accounts?" to which my sister turned around and gave the 'death look' and said some un-nice things back. They must have felt stupid then for realizing that they offended her and replied, "Oh, but you're still beautiful." to which my sister said, "And you're still fucking ugly!" Which I would have to say is a truth. They are ugly for generalizing "our kind" and thinking just because we're short, we can't have bank accounts?! Honestly, you are the ones being stupid in this case and if you're reading this, I WISH that next time you say something like that, you say it to my face! Cowards say it to our backs and only when they're with someone else!

Unfortunately, this isn't the first time and won't be the last time. Eventually, there is a line that will be crossed and I hope that day never comes but when it does, I know that people who have gone through this before will understand my rationality behind my actions.

Apples to Apples

A day at the apple orchard (Hillside Apples in Casco, Wisconsin) . . .

I love this time of year in Wisconsin! Especially, when my sisters all gather at my place and we plan events for the weekend such as this day when we went to the apple orchard. The kids had a great time picking apples, having a picnic, and taking pictures. I'm glad that the day turned out dry (no rain!) and it was a cloudy, overcast sky kinda day - perfect for pictures - no squinting! *two thumbs up*

I love going to this apple orchard because of the variety of apples they grow as well as pumpkins and pears. They also sell amazing apple cider and caramel in their shop. On weekends, they offer free wagon rides around the orchard. Their staff is always friendly and professional - which isn't always so easy to find in Wisconsin, especially if you're Asian (more on that on tomorrow's post about my Octoberfest experience . . .) so I enjoy taking my nieces and nephews there for a great time away from the city. I love exposing them to different things so they don't grow up with doubts like I how I did. Overall, the older kids always look forward to apple picking and the pumpkin patch, which we plan on going in October.

My Minnesota Weekend

My sisters live in Minnesota, which is a 4 hour drive from where I live. So, its not very often that I get to see them but, when I do, I make sure I make the most of it! Living in the Twin Cities have given them lots of access to almost everything you could think of. The Mall of America, great restaurants such as Fogo de Chao, and lots and lots of Asian supermarkets, restaurants, and shopping! We arrived in Minnesota around nine o'clock on Friday night so it was too late to do much but relax. On Saturday morning, we woke up early to start our day off with some Pho at Pho Ca Dao (my favorite spot on University Ave. in St.Paul for Pho)! We then headed to the Hmong Village in St. Paul for some shopping. What I love about this place: 1. Its cleaner than most Hmong markets in the area. 2. Its huge! 3. I love bargaining with vendors for what I think is the best price for the goods. 4. There are tons of imported goodies from Asia such as clothes, jewelry, shoes, purses, makeup, and food! Here are some pictures I snapped (sneaked) from my iPhone since cameras are not allowed inside.

This outfit post is actually from yesterday's outfit. I attended the launch of Missoni for Target and wore my blue sweater from Younkers and my JewelMint Setting Sun necklace. I received a lot of compliments on the necklace. I love it and glad I got it from a fellow JM fan.

I tried on a Missoni for Target button up cardigan but it was a size XL and the last one. It was a little bit too big for me so I skipped out on purchasing it.

More Rayon! Woohoo. I love this fabric. I just want to bathe in it!

I walked out of Target with my suede pump purchase from the collection.

I also tried on this orange, polka dotted top but it didn't look right on me so I skipped out on this too.

Missoni for Target launched today

I thought I had gone into Target pretty early this morning at ten o'clock but I was wrong! When I got there, the selection of clothes and dinnerware had been picked through, the bedding was all gone (which was the ONE thing that I really wanted was from their bedding collection), and the shoes only had one each of each size. The scarves, gloves, handbags were picked through as well and there were no storage boxes at all. The only thing they had abundance of was the makeup bags. And the Target website is down too because of the high volume of traffic. Already, there has been stuff from the collection posted on eBay for ridiculous amounts of money and people are paying for it! Wow. I never knew people wanted to own a business so bad. Unfortunately, because of this, I did not buy (could not buy) anything from the collection except for the suede pumps. I grabbed the last one in a size 5.5 - usually, I wear a size 6 in shoes but I found that the Missoni for Target pumps were longer so I opted for a 5.5 which fit perfect! I love the quality of the shoes and even though there were no storage boxes at my local Target, I feel like the shoebox in which the pumps came in was like a storage box already because of its design and sturdiness. I usually pay more for unknown brand shoes that aren't as great quality as these so I feel pretty lucky that I scored these. After browsing through the Missoni collection, I started noticing a bit of a crowd that came after me that was browsing through it too. And when I was checking out, two other ladies had checked out with some Missoni goodies as well. I hope the website is up soon so I can see what else they have in stock!

Sorry for the lack of updates. I've been in a slump lately and with the last holiday of the Summer just around the corner, I've been pretty busy planning and hosting parties. I just wanted to update everyone with my weekly feature of the day. It just seems fitting since last night was the VMA's on MTV and there was some amazing performances including Adele, Bruno Mars, and Chris Brown. Congratulations to Beyonce and JayZ on their happy news. The award for best baby announcement goes to them!

As you all know, music can be overplayed sometimes on the radio but this song by Nicki Minaj always keeps my blood pumping for some reason. It could be the superbass... :P

I am also a fan of Tyler Ward on YouTube. He's an amazing artist and I hope he comes out with an album of his own but for now, I enjoy listening to his acoustic covers!

Welcome to the first Wardrobe Wednesdays feature! I'm so nervous to share this with you because I hardly ever take full length photos of myself and share them with everyone! Plus, I'm always the photographer so I hardly ever get a chance to be in front of the camera. It's hard-work setting up the tripod, focusing it, and then you'll need to get a remote control too if you don't like setting the timer on the camera and running quickly back to get yourself in the frame. And, if you know me well, you'll know that over the years I've gained a lot of weight. I'm still trying to get use to this new body but I don't think I'll ever accept it. I think if I keep trying to do this feature, it will help with my body image and steer me towards a healthier lifestyle.

I was going to stop into ULTA earlier but this Summer has been quite a journey for me, literally. I graduated in May, flew to California in June to visit my sister, and then I just got back from a roadtrip to Mount Rushmore - Yellowstone - Rocky Mountains & Kansas City last week and this weekend we went on the annual Friend's Camping Trip. I was so excited to try out all of the samples I received in my Birchbox this month so I immediately did so and took some pictures too! Here goes...

Befine Exfoliating Cleanser

I was extremely excited to try out this product because ever since I got that grain of St. Ives exfoliating cream in my eyes and couldn't flush it out for 2 hours, I've been weary about exfoliaters so this was at the top of my list to try. When I first opened the pack, I thought there wasn't a lot of product in the pack but I was wrong. I used a pretty good amount of it thinking I couldn't store it after opening it and there was still a pretty decent amount left over. The grains in this product is large and when I start rubbing it into my face, it turns into a soapy foam lather. I avoided the eye area as much as I can - still traumatized from my St. Ives experience. Rinsing off was easy and my skin felt soft and smooth after my pat and dry. I used this product yesterday morning and this morning, my skin is very smooth and does not feel dry at all! I think I'll be buying the big size version of this to use permanently since my ALL-TIME FAVORITE exfoliating cream is no longer in commission.

Blinc Mascara

I was also looking forward to trying this mascara because the current one I have (Neutrogena) smudges a lot and I didn't feel like throwing it away cause it'd be like throwing money away. So, when I opened my box to find this lovely packaged mascara waiting for me, you can say I was jumping up and down for joy! I tried it out last night and I must say I'm very impressed. Just like what it claims, the thin tub does encase your lashes. Just take a look at the above photo I took after I wiped away my eye makeup with Sonia Kashuk eye makeup remover (my favorite!). Look at all those black, fake looking lash particles. At first, I was afraid that those were my lashes falling off but I examined closer and that wasn't the case. Overall, the mascara had minimal to no smudging at all (6 hours wear) and taking it off with my eye makeup remover was easy. The pretty little tube package that it comes in is very cute and I could always reuse it to store my eyeliner pencils!

LIFTLAB anti-aging serum

Honestly, I've never used a serum before in my life so I was quite disappointed that Birchbox did not provide a "how-to" on the card or that LIFTLAB didn't provide one on their label. So, I was very clueless when it came to this product. Do I mix it with moisturizer or do I just smooth it all over my face or just in certain "trouble" areas?

I don't know but what I did was just dabbed a little under my eye and smoothed it out with my fingers. The consistency is very similar to saliva (I admit, I'm a major drool-er. Can't help it. My Mom said I was a cute baby so people pinched my cheeks a lot therefore, I have a drooling issue I can't control.) and the after-feel is similar to superglue. It dries up quick but I see no results from it. Do you know what to do with serums and how I should go about using it?

Twistband Hair Tie

If I didn't read the Birchbox card that came along with my box, I would have thrown this away at being offended on why Birchbox sent me an elastic ribbon but, thank goodness I like reading! And ya know what? It just happens to be that when I cut my hair and get a new hair product that my old hair ties start showing up all over the place! Ha! They must have a life of their own. Well, I'd have to say I'm pretty impressed with this "innovation" since there really isn't much to go on just by looking at it but my thick hair appreciates this thing. It really holds my hair in its place really well without pulling some strands out like how my old Goodie hair ties did. The knotted end was annoying at first but I don't touch my hair that often so I don't mind. The only thing that stinks is the price - a set of 3 for $5.00 dollars!

Roadtrip: Final Destination - Kansas City

After our 10 hour drive from Denver, CO to Kansas City, MO - we were ready to check into our hotel and chow down on some famous Kansas City BBQ! Our hotel which was pretty inexpensive was actually pretty comfortable. The rooms were a good size with 2 queen beds, a desk, a flat screen tv, wi-fi, a closet to hang our your clothes and an ironing board and iron, and 1 bathroom. For $40 + tax a night... I can't complain. I especially loved their "Dream Well" bedding. I've been trying to google where I can purchase my own "Dream Well" bedding ever since I got back but to no such luck!

Pros and Cons of Microtel in Kansas City

PROS
+ very luxurious bedding
+ rooms and bathrooms were pretty decent size
+ wi-fi available
+ closet with hangers
+ very affordable

CONS
+ not enough elevators
+ the AC was not turned on therefore our room was muggy when we arrived.
+ complimentary breakfast felt very out of the box. yuck!

After we unpacked and took a little breather, we drove to Oklahoma Joe's BBQ for some good-ass ribs! I was very surprised to find out that this was one of the 13 places Anthony Bourdain wanted you to eat at before you died and I was surprised at the fact that it was basically a gas station! Yeah. Seating was kinda tiny because of that fact but our group of 13 found seating right when we got our meals so people just eat and go. Very convenient. The meals were cheap ranging from 5 to 15 dollars and the ribs were cheap as well. I must admit, I'm not really a BBQ and ribs kinda-gal so my husband was quite surprised when I finished my meal before he did. The ribs were fall off the bone delicious, the toast was the perfect compliment to the ribs and the pulled pork with BBQ sauce was to-die-for! I highly highly recommend you to stop on by this joint if you ever get into that neck of the woods. I learned to never judge a book by its cover from this experience! We bought two jars of the BBQ sauce to bring home with us and a full slab of ribs. Needless to say, not everyone got a taste of that wonderful meat! yummm!!!

OVERALL

This roadtrip from the beginning took a lot of planning and researching since this was a first time trip for all of us (except me since I've been out there once - 8 years ago). So, my research skills along with my SIL's attention to details and OCD, we did pretty good. We learned that it was okay to do different things at different times and that we didn't need to be together all the time. Next time, we know how to pack for the weather, what we need to pack and what we don't need to pack. We also know the best places to eat and the best places to take a photo opportunity.

I saved all of my gas receipts and we spent a total of $519.79

Not bad at all for the amount of space we covered.

If you asked me to do this again, I would in a heartbeat!

Roadtrip: Third Destination - Rocky Mountain National Park

From Jackson Hole, Wyoming we decided to take the scenic route 191S to 40E so we could enter through the South West entrance of the Rocky Mountain National Park. Although it was nice, it wasn't as scenic as the ride from Yellowstone to Grand Teton and it threw us back 5 hours! We arrived at our campsite in RMNP at 1:20 in the morning. We had to set up our tents and just knocked out for the few hours we had. Thank goodness I booked our horseback riding for 10:30 instead of 8:00 like the other group did for their toured bike riding but fortunately, they were able to call in the morning and cancel.

Our campsite was beautiful. Probably the BEST one in that campground. Site #36 and 37 was perfect for us. It was a walk-in tent site but it wasn't that far of a walk. The parking unit was enough to fit 3 SUV's and it was close enough of a walk to the bathrooms.

Now... onto the pros and cons of Moraine Park campground and RMNP

PROS
+ each site has a picnic table and fire pit that included a sturdy and helpful grill rack.
+ each site had a padded area for the tent.
+ each site was only $20 + tax per night.
+ was close enough to bathrooms, amphitheater, and garbage units.
+ rangers were very helpful, friendly, and drove around a lot... I felt very safe there.
+ campsite 37 had the best views! Lots of privacy.
+ Moraine Campground has a FREE shuttle ride that'll take you to various nearby trails or sites. Take advantage of that!
+ We didn't run into as much traffic and animals like Yellowstone.
+ There are tons of activities and nearby villages for everyone including: horseback riding, biking, hiking, shopping, dining, fishing! Just go on to the website to find out more information.

CONS
- No showers at all in the park. In order to shower, you must drive out of the park to the nearby towns and pay to shower. It was okay since it was only a 10 minute drive from Moraine Park Campground to Estes Park but the showers we went to (Dad's Laundry and Showers) was expensive ($5 per person) and only 3 small shower stalls per bathroom (mens/womens). No hairdryers either!
- The bathrooms were nasty. There was no paper towels nor was there a hand dryer to wipe your hands after you've washed them. You either had to bring your own or let them air dry. There were a ton of moths in the bathroom stalls and sinks. No lighting in there at all whatsoever!
- Although it was a scenic one, there was only 1 road in RMNP!

The weather there was unpredictable but supposedly we came during the "monsoon" season. I thought it was perfect since I would rather have it a little cooler than humid! I hate mosquitoes and the cold weather certainly helped a lot out in RMNP. It did rain on and off but only in some parts. You just have to chance it! I was glad that we decided to go horseback riding when we did because right when we got back to our campsite, it started pouring... but it got super sunny and hot after the 15 minute rain-pour!

Pros and Cons of Sombrero Ranches horseback riding (in Moraine Park Campground)

PROS
+ very close to our campsite so finding it was easy and convenient.
+ $50 bucks per person for 2 hours is not bad at all... especially with all of the scenery we took in.
+ the staff was nice, friendly, and well trained.
+ the horses were well trained and behaved.

CONS
- some of the dirt roads we took were horrible. Dirt got in our mouths from the wind blowing and some of the paths seemed impossible to handle.
- there was no photography opportunity such as stopping in the middle of an open field to get off your horse to take some photos and get back on.

That was about it for the cons. I highly recommend this for anyone looking to do some casual sight-seeing in the RMNP!

After our horseback riding, eating lunch, and then taking a little nap. We decided to head out on a mini-journey to a stream we saw nearby the ranch. This stream ran through an open field and there was a ton of fly fisherman out testing their skills and luck. We were able to snap a few shots with the sun high in the sky. It didn't help with the cold, fresh mountain water though. We only could keep our feet in the water for no more than a minute. It was very cold! I don't know what this stream was called but its near our campsite... we call it the Bella Lost Sandal Stream because my niece Bella lost her sandal in it.

When we left RMNP, we felt a deep hole in our hearts because only 2 nights and 1 day there was not enough for us! There were so many things we felt like we needed to explore yet. We vowed to come back next year and hopefully, give us more time to explore! We did however, miss the comfort of a nice bed, hot showers, and a clean running toilet. So we forgot the Rockies and happily settled into our Suite in Denver. It was a cozy suite with 2 queen bedrooms, 1 bathroom, a living room with a pull-out couch and a small kitchen. Too bad we only spent 1 night there because it really was relaxing!

Pros and Cons of Towneplace Suites by Marriott in Denver, CO

PROS
+ clean, cozy, comfy
+ kitchen came equipped with drinking glass, cooking utensils, pots and pans.
+ good parking, lots of room
+ wheeled carts nearby elevators
+ complimentary breakfast was good.

CONS
- washer and dryers were little and the dryers did not dry that well. $1.00 each.

For lunch, we ate at Pho 79 in Denver. The place was clean and well decorated. The service was fast (as it should be with Pho restaurants) and the noodle broth itself was delicious. The only complaint we had was that they gave us too much meat and not enough noodles. I know! Total opposite than the norm.

For dinner, we ate at Fogo De Chao in Denver. Although it was pricey (at $50 per person) it was well worth it. Oh M GEEeeee... was it meat galore or what? I love the quick service they had and the food was spectacular. The salad bar was amazing already so when we actually got served with meat, it was definitely heaven. At least that's how I felt like after the first 20 minutes. Boy, was I in a major food coma. It was hard for me to open my eyes and sit straight. All I wanted to do was curl up in a nice comfy couch after eating all this wonderful food. I didn't even need any kind of steak sauce cause they prepared it so well with seasoning! ummm ummm umm finger-licking good. I'm looking forward to the next Fogo visit (in either Minnesota or Chicago)! This time, I know to pace myself instead of being my polite Mid-western self and saying yes to everything at once!

Roadtrip: Second Destination - Yellowstone

The day we arrived in Yellowstone, it was scattering rain and cloudy. We did not know how to dress for the day because part of it was warm and later on the evening it was cold. The drive there from South Dakota was very scenic once we hit Wyoming. We drove up, down, around, and through mountains. I lost all sense of direction because we went through so many mountains and it seemed endless. There were so many little scenic areas to stop and take pictures but since we were on a time crunch, we didn't stop. Next time we plan to come out here again, I will have to plan so that we will have time to stop whenever we see a scenic area and step out to take some pictures!

We did make one pit stop in a large resting area. The scenery was gorgeous and that was our first mountain stop experience. The feeling was thrilling and we were all on a natural high! I even opened our windows while we drove through these mountains!

2. Entrance to the Parks looks the same at all National Parks. We purchased the $80 dollar pass so we could go to all of the National Parks (good for up to a year). The thing is, you can basically get in for FREE if you show up late/early in the day or like if you're driving from one national park right into another like how we did with Yellowstone and Grand Teton. Oh well, at least we have till next July to use it!

3. Very confusing, the Lower Falls is BIGGER than the Upper Falls. Its also more terrifying and the trail that leads to it is narrow and heavily populated with tourists. Its about 20-some levels from the edge of the mountain so climbing back up to the top was exhausting! Thank goodness they created little sitting areas at each level to stop and take a breather. Lets just say, my asthma kicked into major gear this roadtrip - being so high in elevation and all.

4. The Lower Falls runs through gorgeous red granite mountains.

One thing I disliked about Yellowstone is the TRAFFIC! I realize that some people may never have seen wildlife before, but that does not mean that you should stop your vehicle in the middle of the road, get out of your car with your 3 year old, walk right up to the bison on the side of the road, and start snapping away!!! They build these roads with only one lane going both ways and the roads are very narrow with no shoulder and the majority of them being curvy and off mountains. Trying to pass these cars is a major NO so all you can do is WAIT! Very frustrating!!! The National Parks already make scenic passing areas where cars can pull into to snap some pictures and take in the view. There is absolutely no reason for anyone to stop their vehicle in the middle of the road except in the case there is an animal crossing the road.

Since we only had one day to explore Yellowstone, we stayed around East Yellowstone since our campground (Bridge Bay) was near the East Entrance. So we got to see the Mud Volcanoes, The Falls, and the Mammoth Hot Springs (which was a FAIL!). We also drove all the way North West looking for Wolves but unfortunately, wolves are smarter than Humans and we were unsuccessful in locating them. It was a waste of driving 2 hours. Don't do it. Don't go looking for wildlife in Yellowstone, they'll come looking for you.

We arrived in Yellowstone around 5PM and set up camp in Bridge Bay. Since it was still pretty light outside and the rain had stopped, we decided to go for a mini hike to the Yellowstone Lake - which was right across our campsite across the road. After taking a few pictures, we noticed some traffic up ahead of the road. We knew there had to be an animal sighting cause why else would there be traffic? Well, we were right... it was an animal - a Grizzly Bear to be exact. Yup. That big 'ole grizzly was in the open field just going back and forth between the campground (ours) and the road. It was torn because no matter which way it went, there were people. I stayed my distance while some brave members of my group trudged along the road to get a "closer" look. I was fine where I was, which was about a quarter mile away from it. After the ranger came, cars started moving along again and we left to go back to our campsite. It only occurred to me then how close that grizzly bear was to our campsite. I still get goosebumps thinking about it.

I'd have to say, I got pretty lucky in booking our campsites for Yellowstone and Rocky Mountains because we got some great views! I booked early April and when we got to both campsites they were both full. I suggest if you're planning on doing this, book months in advance for the best spots. Both camping sites were $20 dollars a night. Not bad at all and by camping for 4 nights, it saved us a ton of money in lodging and made us appreciate hot showers and a nice comfy bed! Bridge Bay has no showers, but there are nearby pay showers in Fishing Bay (which is like a short 8 minute drive) and their showers are pretty clean. It was $3.75 plus tax per person to shower and you paid that money to a cashier. There are about 8 shower stalls in each room (mens/womens) and its right inside the laundry facility too so its very convenient to just throw in a load of laundry while you're showering. I suggest getting there early (7 or 8 am) cause right after we arrived and started showering, a line of about 10 were waiting for their turn to shower. They had hot water and you could shower as long as you want. I also suggest you gas up before entering Yellowstone cause gas there was $4.09 for UnLeaded while most places we gased up at were $3.40 to $3.69 only. Oh! And bring lots of Mosquito repellent spray and candles. I suggest the Sportsman Mosquito spray because it seems to work the best, even though it may be a little bit more oilier than the regular ones. I'd rather be oily for a bit rather than be itchy for a few days!

Grand Teton National Park and Jackson Hole, Wyoming has got to be one of the best parts of this roadtrip. Scenic and breathtakingly beautiful, both these spots are a beauty you do not want to miss!

Roadtrip: First Destination - South Dakota

South Dakota was our first destination and we were really excited to get going on our roadtrip since the week leading up to it was super-slow! We left Wisconsin around 10 at night. I tell you what, driving through the night was fast but long. We were really pooped out by the time we got to South Dakota. Since we had not planned the different time zones (durr!) we were an hour early so we decided to kill time by visiting Wall Drug, South Dakota. Along the way there, there were a ton of billboards and ads on the sides of the high way advertising Wall Drug. I must admit, they had me curious. It's a nice little tourist area with super antique-y shops and cool figures to take pictures with like giant Jackalopes and Dinosaurs. We had breakfast there too and it had one of the best french toast and syrup I've ever ate! If you're going that way, might as well stop by Wall Drug and see what its all about!

3. This T-Rex sits and waits patiently for 10-15 minutes before it goes on a roaring rampage!

After Wall Drug, we arrived in Keystone, South Dakota where Mount Rushmore sits. I'd have to say, I always thought it was bigger - at least in movies that's how it seemed like but its pretty tiny and its very touristy there. I saw all different sorts of people from all over the world there. We probably only spent an hour or so there. Not much to do or see. After our short hike below and near the monument, we checked into our hotel in Keystone. The rooms we booked were joined so that was nice and safe for us but the rooms themselves were tiny, especially the bathrooms. We decided to walk across the street from our hotel to this All American Family Restaurant and I'd have to say that was the worst $15 bucks I ever spent on a buffet! It doesn't even compare to Golden Corral Buffet and that's cheaper! For $15 dollars we got shitty service, small cups of water, old and dried up meat, mashed potatoes out of a box, fruit that flies were swarming over, and a salad bar that looked more like a wet bar. The dessert table only had one dessert on it and it was cake out of what looked like a Sam's Club box! PLEASE don't go eat at that restaurant okay. If you are planning on visiting, I'd drive the 10 minutes out of that touristy area and eat at a different place!

Jewelmint Obsession!

Some people might think this is funny but I seriously do have an obsession with Jewelmint. Especially their earrings! I love them all so much! These 4 are in my Favorites. I have one in possession, and two on the way (hopefully soon)! Now, all that Jewelmint needs to do now is release the Western Dreams earrings and my life will be complete!

Birchbox : July 2011 Edition

My first Birchbox arrived today via USPS and this is what I got:

My first impressions:

- It is very small (about 7.5 inches) but the box is very sturdy.

- The products I received are of decent sample sizes. I pay more at Sephora for sample sizes.

- I love the packaging. Very well put together.

- I like how this is the first designer curated box. I ordered mine just in time! They sold out.

- I can't wait to see what's in next month's box and I hope Birchbox continues these guest-curated boxes. Its really pretty!

- For $10 dollars a month, it really isn't bad but I would like to see more makeup items in mine.

Sephora July Mini-Haul

Recently, I ran out of my Philosophy Hope in a Jar daily moisturizer and my Cargo mattifying face primer so I was dying to stop into Sephora since I have not worn makeup in a couple of days. I also needed a face cleanser since the Noxzema one that I'm currently using is too harsh on my skin. I'm aging so I need something that will soothe my skin, not destroy it. Then, I also ran out of my Loreal DeCrease eyeshadow primer a while back as well. I guess it was a good thing that all those worked out so that I didn't have to keep going back and forth for just one item. Here is what I got from my trip to Sephora yesterday:

1. UD eyeshadow primer potion $19 - (in the tube since I don't like the wand.)
2. Josie Maran daily sun protect moisturizer $14 - (I've been wanting to try out her products for the longest time since I think she's a gorgeous model with flawless skin.)
3. Fresh Soy Face Cleanser $15 - (I've tried this one before and I like it cause its very soothing and takes all of my makeup off without any troubles.)
4. Fresh Prime & Glow $10 - (this is a very small sample of their face primer and illuminating sheer cream. I didn't want to buy the regular size since I wanted to try these if they work for me first.)

total w/ tax = $60.90

I'm waiting for my July Birchbox to get here so I can review the products and see if its worth the subscription. I'm thinking, if I get sample sizes of stuff I usually buy at Sephora for $10 bucks then I might as well stick to it. But that's the thing with Birchbox... you can't pick and choose and you never know until you get it! Stay tuned for my review once I get it! I've already seen some July 2011 Birchboxes and they look to be okay. I don't want to set my hopes so high. :\

I also wanted to share my new shoe deal treasure too. I found these MukLuks at Mills Fleet Farm for only $4.99! They're super comfy and very native-bohemian. Love it!!!!

1) I just recently started eating fish (thanks to Sushi) after a long hiatus due to me choking of a fish bone when I was 7 years old. I made it a goal this year to try new things and after trying the Salmon sushi, I was hooked. I still don't eat other fish but salmon is a great start for now.

2) I've always loved thrift shopping. It comes from many years of visiting the local thrift stores like Bethasda, Salvation Army, Goodwill with my Mom.

3) I just recently graduated with my Associates in Marketing and Graphic Communications. So visit my page, check out my work, and hire me!

4) I like writing a lot more than typing. Not sure what it is about writing with a regular ole pen and paper that makes my mind jump out like thousands of shooting stars.

5) My husband is a better cook than me. He's also got better hygiene. :\

6) I'm more of a country girl rather than a city girl although I love fashion a lot! I actually remember what I was doing when I choked on a hard candy when I was 8... I was watching a Fashion Runway show and thinking to myself I was going to be one of those models one day.

7) I like Tom Brady but I'm not a Patriot fan.

8) I have 9 sisters. We shared almost everything!

9) I love listening to all sorts of music including classical, hard rock, and polka!

10) I love eating DQ Dilly Bars. Gotta have at least a few every Summer!

11) Last time I went on a road-trip, it was from Chicago to California and now I'll have the opportunity to go again near my 28th birthday this month!

12) I've always been a document-or. Meaning, I love taking pictures, videos, writing journals, stories, blogging, etc. Anything to keep that memory alive!

13) I'm more of a skincare girl rather than a makeup girl. I never was into it and just recently (like last year) got really into it. Other than that, I never knew what primer was and that it was so helpful. Thanks to beauty blogs around the world, I can relate and learn.

14) If I walked into a retail store I'd probably more than 90% walk out with shoes or jewelry.

15) I'm looking forward to turning 30 for some reason. Maybe cause its such a big milestone and I'm always up for tackling such big events!

JewelMint: Rio Bravo Earrings review (pic. heavy)

I recently joined this members only website (read my previous post about JewelMint) and made my first purchase on Wednesday and received my earrings on Saturday. Shipping only took about 4 days and that is totally awesome considering it shipped all the way from California to Wisconsin. I was happy I received mine in time for the Fourth of July festivities going on. Unfortunately, I did not find anything from July's Showroom appealing so I decided to skip this month. Maybe I'll go ahead and purchase the Unlock My Heart Necklace since that's the only item available in my favorites room.

When I received this package, I noticed how securely it was sealed and the mint box kept my earrings safe. The velvet drawstring bag held my earrings and I thought it had a very luxurious feel to it as well as the metal tag with the jewelmint logo attached to the bag felt very pricey. I expected the earrings to be humongous but it was the perfect size for my ears. I like the unique clasp in the back of the earring, although taking it off was a pain at the end of the day. Which reminds me... these earrings were not meant to be worn for a full day. I wore these from noon till 11 at night (I was at the local J4 festival to catch fireworks) and by the end of the night, my ears felt like they were about the bleed. Maybe its just my sensitive earlobes but I wouldn't mind wearing them for 4 hours. No more than that.

Overall I think they're made of great quality metal and stone and I like the navy blue string- I think it adds a bit of color punch to the entire look.

- You have no way of viewing past months showroom pieces
- You only have 5 days (the first 5 of the month) to skip the month or else JewelMint will charge your card
- (another con that I've read online that doesn't apply to me) I've read a lot of complaints recently on JewelMint's FB page with members purchasing an item, their card getting charged, and then an email stating their product has oversold. This is not only a JewelMint fault but as well as other retailers I've seen too as well. So far, JewelMint has resolved their issues so I hope their website gets a major upgrade to update their inventory faster so this never happens again.

Here is also an issue I'd like to discuss- I've noticed that many members will purchase a lot of the same JewelMint pieces and then sell them for ridiculous amounts on eBay. How do you feel about this? Do you think its fair that they are doing this? Here is an example:

JewelMint sells all their jewelry online for only $29.99 a piece and with special discounts, especially for first time buyers, you can use promo codes such as WELCOME50 to apply a $15 dollar discount off your first purchase - therefore, you only pay $14.99 (that includes the price of the piece and FREE shipping). So for someone to sell it on eBay for $69.99 pisses me off because it'll only be a matter of time before JewelMint gets fed up with people profiting from their brand that they'll start to jack up the prices of these pieces! Do you agree with me? I believe that JewelMint is a community with common interests and the members in that community should not try to be a business that rips other members off!

For Memorial Day, Forever21 had a FREE SHIPPING code to use on purchases over $15.00 dollars (normally, its free shipping on orders over $75) so I browsed and I wanted to take advantage of this deal but like true to form, when I want to spend money (and when I have money) I can never find anything "worth" buying. Ya know?! So, I just bought two things from the website. A black, racer-back romper and a gemstone ring. My order came in today and the ring looks nice, its a bit loose... I should have ordered a size 6 instead of 7 but every time I try long, and oversized ring at their stores, its always too tight, so I bought a size 7 thinking it should be okay. I haven't tried the romper yet but I will tomorrow and probably take some pictures.
